Eventually, glancing across at him, I noticed that his body language had shifted. He had slumped down in his seat and was gazing out of the side window.

‘What’s up?’ I asked. ‘Anything the matter?’

‘Nothing,’ was his reply. He turned further away from me and gazed more intently at the scenery.

‘No, really,’ I quizzed, ‘what’s the matter? I can see something’s going on.’

‘Nothing.’ This time in a ‘leave me alone’ tone.

I pulled the car over to the side of the road and switched the engine off. Turning towards him, I said softly, ‘OK, so what’s the problem? I can see something is bothering you, but I don’t know what it is.’
